Casting Processing Products Inspection

Spectrometer in Dandong Foundry

Spectrometer can quickly inspect the chemical components for grey iron and ductile iron,

including the composition of C, Si, Mn, S, P, Cr, Mo, Ni, Cu, Mg. Its characters are quick,

accurate and simple.

Our foundry has used this machine in our production for many years. It has replaced the

 traditional chemical analysis method.

Physical Testing

Our foundry uses this machine to inspect the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation

for the iron and steel castings. We can issue the physical testing certificates.

The followings are the tensile strength test bars for ductile iron castings. Normally,

we produced at least three bars each furnace.

Chemical Analysis

Our foundry uses chemical analysis lab. to inspect the chemical components of the raw iron (pig iron).

We also use this lab. to inspect special chemical components for the alloy castings.

Metallographic Microscope

 Metallographic Microscope is used to inspect the micro structure for

the gray iron and ductile iron castings, such as percent of spheroidization

 (nodulizing grade), which is the most important factor affecting the

mechanical properties to ductile iron. 



Brinell Hardness Tester

Brinell hardness tester is used to inspect the casting hardness.

Our foundry has desktop hardness tester and portable hardness tester,

which is smaller and could be used in the site. Hardness is the important

standard to the quality of materials.


Destructive Inspection


Chainsaw Cutting Machine

With alloy saw, the cutting machine can destructively inspect the inside

defects of grey iron and ductile iron castings. This inspection is visual and

accurate, and especially effective to inside shrinkage and slag inclusion.

As ductile iron, the ultrasonic inspection can not distinguish small shrinkage

defects, which will be dangerous for pressure-bearing casting parts.

Although destructive inspection can not exam all castings in batch production,

it could be very useful for inspection to samples, improving casting pouring

process, and also could be used for random inspection during batch production.
The followings are the cut section of ductile iron castings.

Our foundry has an X-ray flaw detector, which can inspect 50mm

penetration depth. We used it to inspect the inside quality for some iron castings.

Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI)

Liquid penetrant inspection (LPI) is also called as dye penetrant inspection (DPI),

or penetrant testing (PT), is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used

to locate surface defects on metal castings, such as small cracks, porosity and shrinkage.

Visual inspection can not find these tiny defects, but those defects may seriously

affect the pressure-bearing casting parts. Our foundry is using this inspection

method for grey and ductile iron casting products.

Foundry Sand Inspection Devices

In order to control the quality of iron castings, the constantly inspection to foundry

sand is necessary. These devices mainly inspect the green sand particle size,

water ratio and intensity data.


Surface Roughness Measuring Instrument

In order to inspect the surface finish smoothness of machined parts, our foundry has

bought a surface roughness measuring instrument, also called as surface finish indicator,

which could measure Ra, Rz and RMS.


Inspecting Iron Castings by USA DAKOTA Ultrasonic Velocity Gauge


According to the international study, and many standards, the ultrasonic velocity

though the cast iron and cast steel materials has close relationship with the nodularity,

tensile strength, and hardness of the material. Therefore, by the ultrasonic velocity

gauge, we could inspect the material quality by large quantity.

Moreover, if there is any porosity, shrinkage, and other casting defects inside, the

velocity will be abnormal. According to our experience, we could judge the defects

types and size. Therefore, we could inspect the inside casting defects by this gauge too.
